BY THE NUMBERS–GREENS TEAM 2016-17!

from Joann Bannon

As usual, however, the numbers don’t tell the complete story! What we’re simply unable to count is the amount of effort and enthusiasm put into this project by the following members of the 2016-17 GREENS TEAM!

Please join me in thanking:

Tom Dougherty, Rick Melby and Michelle Funk, Rod and Karin Lorenz, Brian Buralli, Joe and Ed Merkle, Aaron Amstutz, Colleen Johnson,Sid Ruckreigel,  Matt Kindred & Remy Winget and their son Ryan, Andrew Rand, Jan Krouse, and Bradley volunteers from PKA Fraternity and the “Service on Saturday” project!

Remember that a portion of the revenue from the annual Moss Avenue Sale is used to purchase and dispose of the holiday greens, so an additional thank you goes to the many neighbors who generously allow vendors to use their yards during the sale.

Hanging of the Greens

A heart-felt Thank You to everyone who was willing and able to help with the Hanging of The Greens on Saturday, November 19th.  MBRA neighbors, along with 8 members of the

Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and 15 students from Bradley’s Service on Saturday program made quick work of hanging evergreen garland from the street light poles within the neighborhood.

A ‘Perfect Storm’ of Volunteers

by Ed Tarbuck & Joanne Bannongreens

The beginning of 2015-16 holiday season brought an early snow storm as well as a “perfect storm” of neighbors and Pi Kappa Alpha brothers willing to brave the elements to hang nearly 200 garlands throughout our neighborhood! Unfortunately, the ‘un-hanging’ project also coincided with bad weather. It seems as though the Greens Team cannot be fazed by snow, ice, or rain! Please join me in thanking the following people who made another holiday season bright for all of us:

The prep-teams (critical to an efficient ‘hanging’ day):

  • Tom Dougherty ordered and helped cut rolls of greens;
  • Rod Lorenz cut wires for securing greens;
  • Bows were refreshed by Michelle Funk, Jan Krouse, Karin Lorenz,

Remy Winget, and Colleen Johnson;

  • Replacement bows made by Dan Callahan and crew at Gregg Florist;

The following people helped hang and/or remove garlands:

  • 8 enthusiastic members of the PKA Fraternity;
  • Newcomers this year: Eric Verplaetse, Bill Ackerman, Mark Mapstone, Terry Royer, Colleen and George Johnson;
  • ‘Ol Faithfuls: Rick Melby and Michelle Funk, Joe Merkle, Aaron Amstutz, Nathan Fredrick and his father Paul Fredrick, Jim Evenhuis, Tom and Deb Dougherty, John Timmerman, Nick Cowley, Wayne Johnson, Dove Benoit, Rod and Karin

Lorenz, Andrew Rand, Sid Ruckriegel, Matthew Kindred, Brian Buralli and Maureen Mathews, Bruce and Joseph Zilkowski;

  • Collection and removal of greens: Darcy Ray;
  • Coordination of the ‘unhanging’ crews: Matthew Kindred, with sons Brandon and Ryan!

Remember that a portion of the revenue from the annual Moss Avenue Sale is used to purchase and dispose of the holiday greens, so an additional thank you goes to the many neighbors who generously allow vendors to use their yards during the sale.

THANK YOU to all of those who participated with the GREENS TEAM this year!

We’re looking to expand our ‘experienced’ volunteer base with some young and agile helpers! Come to meet a few neighbors and decorate our lovely neighborhood for this beautiful season. The project usually takes about 2 1⁄2 hours, followed by a hearty lunch with the volunteer crews at Ed and Joanne’s.

Please mark your calendar and join us if you can:

Hats Off to the 2013-14 “Greens Team”

The Moss-Bradley neighborhood is full of ‘do-ers’—people who are ready and willing to get a job done! The do-ers came out again this season in full force to make our neighborhood festive for the holidays and then to clean it up after the New Year!

Many thanks to the 2013-14 Greens Team! The prep-team included Rod Lorenz cutting wires; bows refreshed by Jan Krouse, Michelle Funk, Matt Kindred and Remy Winget; and Bruce Zilkowski helping cut greens. The following people helped hang and/or remove over 2,300 feet of roping on the Moss-Bradley lightposts: 10 enthusiastic members of the PKA Fraternity, Joe Merkle, Aaron, Isaiah, Levi, and Magda Amstutz, Nathan Friederich and Adam Konrad, Jim Evanhuis, Kayla, Anthony and Lucy Speck, Tom and Deb Dougherty, John and Barb Timmerman, Nick Cowley, Wayne Johnson, Rick Melby and Michelle Funk, Bruce & Joseph Zilkowski, Brian Buralli and Maureen Matthews, (with Cottage District helpers), Joe Vilmos, and Michael Covert.

We’re always looking for new helpers. Both hanging and removing greens takes only a few hours of your time on a Saturday morning! If you’re interested in joining us, mark your calendars for the Saturday before Thanksgiving 2014—the date (weather permitting) we plan to hang greens for next season! Again, thanks to this terrific group of neighborhood volunteers!

Joanne Bannon and Ed Tarbuck

Un-hanging of the Greens

Time flies when we are celebrating the holidays, doesn’t it? We’ll meet to wrap up the holidays by removing the greens at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 4! (Please note time change to 10:00–hopefully the sun will warm the January air by then!)

This is usually a fairly quick project so if you are available, come with your ladder, work gloves, and wire cutters. Trucks for green pick-up are needed as well. Meet at Ed and Joanne’s (1705 W Moss) for a cup of coffee, team and street assignments!

  • Un-hanging of the Greens
    • 10 A.M. Saturday, January 4, 2014
    • Weather permitting–we’ll adjust the date if we have too much ice or snow
    • Ed and Joanne’s house: 1705 W Moss

Thanks to all who help with both the hanging and unhanging of the holiday greens!
