Derel and Ellen Monteith are one of the worst-kept secrets on the Central Illinois jazz scene. Since their arrival in Peoria in late 2007, they have won the respect of the most prominent jazz musicians in the area and gathered many fans.
Derel is a pianist who studied in the prestigious jazz program at the University of Miami and thereafter with the Grammy-winning composer Maria Schneider. He has performed with many jazz luminaries, such as the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Frank Foster, and Nnenna Freelon.
Ellen is a vocalist who has a broad performance background, not only in jazz but also in pop and musical theater. Since her arrival in Central Illinois, she has won the hearts of many discerning jazz fans.
Derel and Ellen will be performing an engaging variety of music, including instrumental compositions and a selection of compelling vocal pieces from Ellen. They will be joined by the remarkable talents of Andy Crawford on bass, and Jason Brannon on drums.
The Illinois Central Jazz Train will play the opening set. This exciting seventeen-piece jazz orchestra has graced the CIJS stage several times.
Among the tunes on their play list for April 19 are Speak Low, featuring Doug Wilcox on trombone, Billy Strayhorn’s Johnny Come Lately, Out Back of the Barn, featuring baritone saxophonist Jeff Arbisi, Louie Bellson’s Peaceful Thunder, There Is No Greater Love, and Sertao with Toby Thomas on alto, Matt Buczko on trumpet, and Jeremy Clark on drums.
