Music Opportunity for Neighborhood Children

For the past four summers, Westminster Church on Moss Avenue has sponsored a Music Camp for children in grades 2 through 6, this year adding grades 7 and 8.  We had more than 50 campers each day representing every corner of the city.  It was a great week culminating in a dinner and concert on Friday evening.

With this in mind, it only seems logical that there might be children from our camp, and from here in the neighborhood who might enjoy an ongoing choir experience. Thus, we are seeking children in grades 2 through 6 who might be interested in a weekly choir experience here at Westminster.  The proposed group would meet on Wednesdays after school … beginning at 4:30 p.m. with choir practice for about an hour, and followed by a simple pizza supper provided by the church.  Children need only be interested in singing and come ready to work and have a fun time.

This choir would then prepare music to be sung at a Westminster Sunday morning worship at ten o’clock.  The choir would be scheduled to sing once every five or six weeks.  Being willing to sing in church from time to time is the child’s way to remunerate the church for the music education and supper.

As the new school year is about to begin, and parents seek wholesome activities for their children, this is a perfect way to fill a Wednesday afternoon.  For children in Moss-Bradley, the walk is short being right in the neighborhood.  If you wish, you can bring your child by car, of course.  Westminster Church observes safe sanctuary policies … there are always at least two adults in the room with children at all times.

Director of this endeavor will be Thomas Clark-Jones, Westminster’s Organist-Choirmaster.  Mr. Clark-Jones, who has degrees from Wilkes University, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and from the State College of New Jersey has worked with children’s choirs for over fifty years both in church and secular settings.  He is the founding director of the award winning ‘Cantate: The Children’s Choir of Central Virginia’, founded in 1993 and still going strong as a major piece of the cultural scene in the Central Virginia area.

So, if you’re looking for a learning experience your children will enjoy and come home singing new tunes … here is a good opportunity.  The choir will be a ‘go’ when registrations reach 10 to 12 singers.  Please call the church office at 673-8501 to register your children.  Any questions, feel free to e-mail or call Tom Clark-Jones at 717.503.8929 or tclarkjones1227@gmail.com.  Westminster seeks to serve this community and beyond … if we can give children the gift of music … that will be a great service to enrich our community.

Two Piano Jazz, Sunday, September 10, Sunday , 4 PM

The 2017 – 2018 season of the Gretchen R. Iben Arts Series at Westminster Church will kick off with a concert of great Jazz for Two Pianos.  Derel Monteith of the Derel Monteith Trio will preside at one piano, and John Campbell, now resident in Bloomington, but the world famous as a professional jazz pianist will preside at the other piano.  The exciting sound of two pianos is always a treat, and jazz in this form is most particularly attractive.  Derel and John will be joined by well-known Central Illinois artists including Jason Bannon on drums, Andy Crawford on bass, as well as Larry Harms on reeds and the nationally known trumpeter, David Hoffman rounding out the group.  But the focus will definitely be on the two pianists and their keyboard wizardry, bringing us traditional jazz tunes, popular music and a few standards all to delight the listener.

This concert is a prelude to Westminster’s Jazz Vesper Services which start up again for this season on Sunday afternoon, September 17 at four.  Each week David Hoffman and his friends from the Central Illinois Jazz Community bring first-class jazz as a worthy offering of music before God.  Some congregational songs are included as well as prayers, scripture and a short homily by Pastor Denise Clark-Jones.  The roots of jazz are deeply embedded in the church, and in this service, we return this great American art form to the place where it started.  Come and join us … both for the concert on September 10 and also for the Jazz Vespers which will run throughout the academic year.

Gretchen R. Iben Arts Series Opens at Westminster Church

Series starts Friday, October 14 at 7:30 PM

Sixteen pieces of wire, some wrapped with catgut … four beautiful wooden boxes to hold them … and four talented, young players … and what do you have???

A String Quartet!

In this case the KAIA String Quartet … a group of young artists based in Chicago, participating in its vast musical scene in many different ways, and coming together to concertize as a string quartet that has seen much of the world already!  This makes for a stunning ensemble.  Victoria Moreira and Naomi Culp play violin, Sixto Franco Chorda plays viola and Hope Shepherd is the ‘cellist.  Together they play a repertoire that spans music from the 16th to 21st century.

The evening will be graced by this fine quartet, playing a varied program from Beethoven to Piazzolla.  The graceful and dramatic music of Beethoven soars in a space like the Westminster sanctuary and we already have had a goodly amount of non-traditional music in our worship, so now we stretch it to the concert series with some wonderful Tangos from the pen of Astor Piazzolla the famous Argentinean composer whose classical approach to this native music of South America has brought him acclaim, and audiences great pleasure.

We hope you will set the evening aside to join us.  Bring some friends with you.  Westminster will be alive with sounds of great music all through the 2016-2017 season.  There will be an offering received to help support the series. No donation is required.  We hope to see you on October 14.

For the Moss-Bradley area, this is great music right at your door.  Walk over to Westminster Presbyterian Church and enjoy!

Westminster Presbyterian Church Jazz Vespers

dh

On Sunday, October 18 at four in the afternoon, Westminster Presbyterian Church inaugurated a new Jazz Vesper service.  For some time the church felt the need to expand its worship format into new territory.  Looking over the various possibilities, they decided to stay within the tradition of Westminster’s commitment to using only the finest music for worship.  Thus, the decision to feature jazz,  the great American musical form.

Dave Hoffman and various friends fill the church with everything from cool to hot jazz in praise of God.  Dave doesn’t water anything down, so we hear the best of his art in this service of worship.

Vespers are a very old tradition in the Christian Church.  The form is simple with Scripture, Prayers and music … along with a short Homily (sermon). It is a forty minute service, keeping it within the bounds of possibility for even younger children.  We hope it will truly become a way to bridge all age groups … worshipping together each week. (We do provide a nursery for the smallest children.)

The service will continue through the first week of December.  The second Sunday in December is our traditional service of Lessons and Carols.  Then on the third Sunday of December, we will celebrate a Jazz Christmas that will be a surprise for all, and a real treat.

After the Jazz Christmas, we will take a break until the third Sunday of January.  From then the service extends weekly through the end of May, with the exception of Easter Sunday. Come and join us for Jazz Meets Faith at four each week at Westminster Presbyterian Church!

Next Iben Series Concert:
Peter and the Wolf
A Children’s Event for All
Sunday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m

Several years ago, the Iben Series presented this event to great excitement. The music is the great classic score of Sergei Prokofiev, the great twentieth century master.

In this version, the solo instruments, played by some fine instrumentalists from the faculty of Bradley University, were present to portray all the characters, but the orchestral part is performed on the piano…which makes it available for this kind of program.

Children from the neighborhood, and across the region will be invited to join us in a time of puppet making and general good time, learning about the characters and how they will participate in the performance. Once ready, the music will commence and all the characters will be represented by the children’s puppets.

At the conclusion of the performance, everyone will be invited to have an early dessert … ice cream for all in the Fellowship Hall.

We urge you to invite your friends with children and grandchildren to participate with us in this grand time.

Westminster Presbyterian Church

submitted by Rev. Denise Clark-Jones

It was good to attend my first meeting of the Moss-Bradley Association last evening and to be introduced as the new Pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church. It is a privilege to serve a parish in this historic and beautiful part of Peoria, and I want you to know that I appreciate the unique nature of this part of our city.

It was energizing to realize that the folks who live around the church are passionate and concerned citizens, willing to speak their minds and be active in the decisions that are made that effect this neighborhood. Historic neighborhoods like this are often lost due to apathy, and that is certainly not going to happen here!

I hope to be able to bring about a cordial relationship between the church and this community. I realize that all has not been smooth in the past, and I cannot assure you that the church will always please the community with decisions it must make to forward the cause of its ministry in this city and the world.

However, I promise to be a good listener, and where possible to find points of agreement that will help make us good neighbors. We are here to minister. And we hope that part of that ministry will see many of you come by to worship with us or take part in some special event that interests you.

Our doors are wide open … and no matter what, we will listen, and we will do our very best to be a meaningful and productive part of Moss-Bradley.

As the life of the community and church intertwine here on Moss Avenue, I hope that it will come to be a mutually affirming relationship. As you see me in and about the neighborhood, please take time to say hello and take some time to chat.

Westminster Presbyterian Church News

phillip-sarah-nolanHello Westminster family,

I am so excited to begin this journey with you all. I grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island in a family of seven. I grew up in the Roman Catholic Church until High School, where I began attending Greenwood Presbyterian Church. My very first Sunday at Greenwood, I was invited to youth group and my life has never been the same.

After high school I attended Eastern Nazarene College where I earned a Bachelor’s in Theology with a minor in youth ministry. I served as an intern at Bethel Church of the Nazarene in their student ministry program and really developed a call and passion to lead youth and college ministry.

I met my wonderful wife Sarah Nolan during my sophomore year and we married after I graduated college on August 9, 2008. (I can’t believe how fast our first five years has gone by!).

After graduating I attended Nazarene Theological Seminary, where I am almost finished with my Masters of Divinity program. After moving to attend seminary I became the youth pastor at Shawnee Park Christian Church.

Sarah and I have four cats (Oreo, Oliver, Lulu, and Chloe). I am a huge science fiction fan, I enjoy playing video games, and love watching movies (my favorite being Forrest Gump).

My sincerest hope is that we all act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with the Lord our God (Micah 6:8) as we discover what He has in store for our journey together.

– Phillip Nolan
